News Four You
2023
From the Desk of Alderman Francine Patti and Richard Grochowski
Dear
Friends and Neighbors,
I just wanted to thank everyone that voted in this past election. I am honored to sever you for another four years.
Backyard Chickens
As you are aware there was a
referendum regarding raising chickens in your backyard. The referendum passed
by 4 votes. As a result of the election, the City Council voted 5-3 to allow single
family dwellings to raise up to six hens and no less than 2. No roosters are
allowed. Both Alderman Grochowski and myself voted no on the ordinance. We
received calls/emails from a substantial number of residents asking that we vote
no on this ordinance, We as well as the residents
that contacted us have concerns regarding the attraction of rodents, as well as
other predators. Other concerns we have are: failure to maintain a clean environment
for the chickens, nuisance odors and noise, avian flu, salmonella and campylobacter
bacteria carried by healthy chickens and are communicable to people through
direct contact, exposure to manure, or consumption of undercooked chicken and
eggs. There are some guidelines for raising chickens:
·
A
permit must be obtained before keeping chickens(hens) and a coup
·
A
plat of survey showing the chicken coop location and setbacks from the property
lines
·
Chicken
coop plans
·
Coops
must be at least 10 feet from all property lines
·
The
coup must have a minimum of four square feet per hen and a maximum fifty square
feet will be permitted for both the covered enclosure/structure. The outdoor
run must have a minimum of eight square feet per hen and a maximum of one
hundred square feet
·
Your
property must be registered with the Illinois Department of Agriculture in
order to obtain a coop license
·
Failure
to comply with the guidelines will result in fines as well as revocation of your
permit

Road Construction
Beginning the week of April 24, North Avenue (Illinois Route 64) between
Railroad Avenue and Northwest Avenue is scheduled to be reduced to two lanes in
each direction for pavement work to prepare for a traffic shift. Once
that work is complete in late May, westbound traffic on North Avenue between
Railroad Avenue and I-290 is scheduled to shift to the inside with traffic
remaining reduced to two lanes in each direction and one lane of westbound
traffic traveling on the eastbound side of North Avenue in a counterflow
configuration. When this work is complete this summer, traffic will shift
again, this time with eastbound North Avenue shifted to the inside and one lane
of traffic traveling on the westbound side of North Avenue in a counterflow
configuration. The work is scheduled to be completed in late summer.
